      Health & Biomedical Sciences

The health and biomedical sciences program at Cottey College is designed to serve students who intend to enter a health science career or seek an advanced degree in biomedical sciences.

Through completion of our program, you will

      •  Gain scientific knowledge and use it to form questions, propose hypotheses, develop experiments, and analyze results.
      •  Demonstrate an understanding of ethics, individual and group behavior, social inequities, and human dignity.
      •  Use verbal, non-verbal, written and visual forms of communication to convey information and build relationships.

The beginning of the Health Sciences major was designed to serve the need of students who want to serve humanity through the medical sciences. And so we're talking about physicians, dentists, physical therapists, chiropractors, careers in that general suite, people who need to get a bachelor's degree and then they continue after that into professional training.

And as the program was developed, the goal was really to focus on not just, "Do you know the science?" But also required courses and interpersonal communication. If you're going to work with human beings, you need to know how to communicate with people and you need to understand how different ways of communicating can impact the work you do.

And so we have required courses outside of the sciences, which is one of the signature pieces of the Health Sciences major. As the majors continued, we also now address the needs of students who want to go on and do master's degree or PhD level work in biomedical sciences. So our goal is to address the needs of all of those students and the academic work that's needed to go on and get an advanced degree is very similar for all of those.
